Justice Glen A. Severson

Biography

Justice Glen A. Severson was born in 1949 to a farming family near Sioux Falls. After graduating from high school, he joined the South Dakota Air National Guard, serving from 1967-1973. At that time, he also attended the University of South Dakota, receiving a B.S. in Political Science in 1972. After receiving his degree, he briefly moved to Georgia as he waited to hear about his law school applications. Next, Severson attended the University of South Dakota, School of Law and received a Juris Doctor degree in 1975. After law school, he and his wife moved to Huron, where he worked in private practice, as Huron City Attorney and a Beadle County Deputy States Attorney. Severson’s first appointment to the Bench occurred in 1993, when Governor Mickelson appointed him as Circuit Judge. He also served as Presiding Judge from 2002 until his appointment to the Supreme Court. Governor Rounds appointed Severson to the South Dakota Supreme Court in 2009, after sixteen years on the trial Bench. Justice Severson and his wife live in Sioux Falls and have two children.
